Clothing Care Guide: 5 Tips For Lasting Clothes

Clothing Care Guide: 5 Tips For Lasting Clothes

The most important thing is to treat your clothing with the love it deserves. The most eco-friendly garment is the one you already have at home, and taking care of it to ensure it serves you for as long as possible. That's why it's crucial to wash and maintain your clothing or accessory properly and, when needed, repair or have it repaired to keep it functional.

1. Wash less

Think twice before washing your clothes. Washing garments too often can actually cause damage to the fibres and hence decrease the lifespan. You can extend the time between washing your clothes with these tips:

Airing Out: After wearing your clothes, let them breathe or hang them loosely to avoid trapping moisture.

Brush It Off: Invest in a clothes brush to remove surface dirt and light stains. Using a clothes brush reduces pilling and keeps wool materials smooth.

Spot-Clean Stains: Instead of washing the entire garment, target stains locally to save water and prevent unnecessary wear.

Steam for a Refresh: Use a steamer to freshen up your clothes, eliminate bacteria, and tidy their appearance.

2. Wash your clothes right

When it comes to taking care of your clothes, knowing the right way to wash them can make a world of difference.

Select the correct detergents for your laundry: Every home should have three types of detergents: one for colored laundry, one for whites, and one for wool and silk. Choose eco-friendly and biodegradable detergents that are gentle on the environment and your skin.

Wash your machine time to time: The zeolite in detergents precipitates in the washing machine. Wash the machine empty a few times a year with a 90-degree washing program, and use phosphate-based detergent or citric acid available in pharmacies as the detergent.

Good eco-friendly detergents:

  • Attitude
  • Steamery Stockholm
  • Ecodoo

Use a laundry bag: It protects your clothes and also prevents microplastics from entering the wastewater. Always wash delicate materials like wool and silk in a laundry bag.

3. Remove lint correctly

The best lint remover is a lint shaver, such as the Stemery Pilo 2

Use a lint comb primarily for cashmere products. You can use a lint comb cautiously on other knitwear items, but it was originally designed for cashmere and may damage materials in other knitwear items and increase pilling.

4. Repair

Repairing clothes is a smart and eco-friendly way to extend the life of your wardrobe.

By fixing minor issues like loose buttons or small holes, you save money and help reduce textile waste, making fashion more sustainable. It's a small step that keeps your clothes going strong and reduces your carbon footprint.

5. Story your clothes properly

How you store your clothes matters a lot. If you store them the wrong way, your clothes can get damaged fast.

During winter, it's essential to remember to store your knits and woolen items correctly: Store them in a well-ventilated, dry place, and protect them from pests. Often, it's best to store knits folded on a shelf. Over time, a shirt can gradually stretch at the shoulders when hung on a hanger.

When putting something away for a long time, make sure it's super clean and if possible store all your clothes always inside. This helps stop stains and smells from sticking around. Dirt can also make your clothes wear out faster and even bring in bugs.

When storing your clothes, you can add a bag of lavender or cedarwood chips to freshen them up.
